And the flies are tough, you swat them and they get up and fly away! Try banging a rock on them. Their bite is painful and sometimes bloody. I agree that the northend Brigantine beach is great and usually sparsely populated by humans as it is on the border of the NWR, but the blackhead or deer flies can be ravenous.
